Congratulations to Raquel who has become our first individual East District Age Group gold medalist for several years. In a thrilling final where the lead changed hands several times, Raquel overcame Ailsa Small in the final 50m to win the 200m breaststroke title. Furthermore, she finished less than a second away from the District record in a time of 2:49.39. She led a three pronged challenge from Portobello in this event, with Louise setting a new PB and Katie F almost doing the same though they both missed the cut in this high calibre event. It was a bit of a breaststroke weekend with Rachel and Gillian also competing in the 200m breast (over 16), both setting new PBs and Rachel making the final (with Gillian misssing it by one place).
For the boys, it was a freestyle day with all 4 boys (James, Niall, Will + Gavin) posting PBs in the 400m free resulting in James securing an excellent 5th place in the event. Will set another PB in the afternoon, this time in the 200m free.

This is a time-banded team event which we compete in each year. Each event has 4 timebands so we need a variety of different speeds of swimmers to fill all of the events. Its a difficult one for the spectators as swimmers going too fast don’t score any points but the absence of a scoreboard keeps everyone guessing on how many points are scored in each race.
We had a total of 16 swimmers in the team and everyone contributed to the team points score, top points were accumulated by Isla, Robert, John and Ryan. Biggest PBs on the night were Carys (100m IM), Scott (50m back), John (50m breast), Eilidh M (50m breast) and Scott (50m fly).
Halfway through the evening, we were lying second behind Haddington. Inverleith won a lot of races but many of their swimmers were too fast for their particular heat so they scored no points. The evening ended with two very exciting relays, neither of which had us finishing first but in both we scored top points. The final points were then read out and the winners were….PORTOBELLO. Â
Its the second time in 4 years that we’ve won the trophy and congratulations go to the whole team and the coaches who had the hard job of trying to keep tabs on the scores.
