What's new?

RCP Training
Due to special events taking place, there will be no RCP training on Saturday 9th February (East District Time Trial), nor on Saturday & Sunday 16th & 17th February (Edinburgh International Meet).

Well done to Claire Edwardson who has recently been awarded the Bronze Medallion by the Royal Life Saving Society

Lothian Club Championships - Prestonpans - January 27
An excellent day for Portobello saw us win Div 2 (after winning Div 3 last year) and run Warrender close for the best club on the day. When all events are viewed as if it was all one big league, Warrender came out on top with 376 points and we were only 21 points behind on 355 (last year we were 76 points behind so the gap is getting smaller). Our excellent under 12s team were the best in their age group by a big margin and both the 12/13 and 14/15 teams were a close second to Warrender.
Too many excellent individual swims to mention them all, though Neilson's 100m fly must have been the race of the day. Thanks to everyone who competed, you really did the Club proud.

Telfer Cup - Prestonpans - January 27
This competition is only over four events, all relays. We won both of the under 15 races (medlay and free) and finished a very respectable 3rd and 4th in the senior races. That left us with 23 points, a close second to Warrender with 26 points - once again underlining our position as 2nd top club in the region.
Looking back over the past ten years, both of our under 15 relays were the fastest recorded in this competition!

Scottish Schools Finals - Tollcorss - January 26
A great day out at Tollcross, resulting in one Scottish Schools champion (Raquel in the fly) and two silver medalists (Katie Feather in breaststroke and Jack in the free). We also had several swimmers collecting medals in the relays - Jack, Ritchie and our friend Martin (who was in Lanzarote with us) won silver medals in the boys freestyle relay and Ellie McLaren won a bronze with Heriots in the girls relay.
No medals for the older swimmers but some fantastic times were swum - Rory W led the way in the 200m free with an 8 sec PB, Clare H finished an excellent 7th in the 200m breaststroke with a 6 sec PB and Marc finished 5th in the 200m free ahead of the exceptional Mark Szaranek. We also had some excellent swims on the 100m fly, with Lee knocking 2.5 secs off his PB and Harvey and Katie Ferguson also improving their PBs.
Finally, Rory W has achieved the bronze squad time for his 200m free (in fact he made the 14 yrs time) and both Clare H and Gavin made the bronze squad time in the breaststroke (here too Clare made the 14 yrs time).

East District Time Trials - RCP - January 20th
Some excellent swims at this event which we were using as a practise run for the Scottish Schools next weekend. Our under 12 swimmers were on particularly good form, with the two Katies (Ferguson and Feather) and Douglas all beating their times from Ed Schools and Raquel, Ciaran and Jack all swimming strong 100m events in their stroke. Not to be outdone Gavin, Rory W, Chris and Fi all put in great swims in the longer events and both Robyn and Louise recorded good PBs in their 100m events.
In fact, several swimmers made bronze squad times and its only Jan. They were; Fi, Ciaran, Rory W and Gavin all in the 400m free and Chris, Raquel and Katie Feather in the 200m IM.

Livingston Development Gala - Whitburn - January 19th
A great day at Whitburn which resulted in 28 PBs and a number of podium finishes. Amy led the way, winning the 10 yrs 50m free which was our best event as we took 1,3,4,5 in an event with 37 swimmers.
Carys took second in the 10 yrs breaststroke, as did Erin the 11yrs 50m event. Ellie took second in the 50m back with her twin sister Ciara finishing close behind in third place. Melissa took third in both of her events, the 50m breaststroke and the 50m free.
Biggest improvements of the day went to the Urquhart twins, with Zoe cutting over 9 secs from her breaststroke time and Nicole improving her free time by over 11 secs.
Well done to everyone and thanks to Lindsay and Brian who were team managers on the day and to Jack and Wendy who were our officials.

It's here!

The March goes on!

Details of the first Portobello ASC gala available here. Read it and train!

Updates to the website
We have been extremely fortunate to have had the help of someone outside the club to develop and keep our website going. We are now trying to take on at least some of this ourselves, so if updates don't appear quite right please email the Webmaster.

We're also looking for ways to make this site more interesting, but we need to be wary of publishing any photos / video without the correct permission / controls in place. While we sort that out, if anyone does have any photos or video footage they think might be worth publishing (why am I thinking of a wet club president just now!!), then please try to get it to James

pinHaddington Time Banded Gala
The final gala of a very busy November resulted in 26 PBs out of 40 swims. At the end of the evening we finished second as several swims were too quick for the timeband. However, everyone really enjoyed it and the boys relay ended the night on a really exciting high.
  Too many great swims to mention them all, but these are a few of the best PBs;
Caitlin’s 100m IM (14 sec improvement), Ashlie’s 100m IM (8.6secs), Greg’s fly (6.8secs), Sandy’s fly (4.9secs), Amy GV’s free (4 secs), Kathryn’s IM (4 secs) and not forgetting Scott’s 1.5 secs improvement in the 50m free which he then followed with a fantastic last leg in the relay to catch up a 5 sec gap to win the race.

Thanks to all the parents who helped on the night, contributing to a fun night’s racing.

     pinEdinburgh Schools Finals
A fantastic night at the RCP resulted in 5 Porty swimmers being crowned Edinburgh Schools champion in their event – Ciaran, 50m free; Katie Feather, 50m breast; Raquel, 50m fly; Rachel, 100m free; James, 200m free.
A further five swimmers won silvers ( Rory G, 50m back; Robyn, 100m back; Alison, 100m breast; Clare H, 200m breast; Gavin, 200m breast) with 9 swimmers winning bronze (Kathryn, 50m free; Katie Ferg, 50m fly; Fi, 50m back; Rory W, 100m free; Jenny and Gillian, 100m breast; Harvey, 100m fly; Rachel, 200m breast; Will, 200m IM).
Another 5 Porty swimmers won gold, this time in the relays. The Portobello High School 12/13 boys team won the race of the night, with three of the team being Porty swimmers (Cammy, Gavin and Rory W) and the 4th (Ross) being a member of JETS.
Jenny’s team won the 14/15 girls event and Ellie McLaren was in the winning team in the under 12 event.

     pinCarnegie Minis
A small team attanded  this gala in Dunfermline but competed really well in the pool as well as easily winning the lunchtime dance session. Raquel was competing against arguably the top 11 yr old girl in Scotland and came home with 5 silver medals. Benjamin took silver in the 50m breast and Katie Feather the bronze in the girls 50m breast. Kathryn made the finals of the breast and fly events, Douglas made the breast final and Rory G finished second in the heats of the fly to make the final. Unfortunately he was disqualified for his start in the final, where he finished second in the race.
The day ended with the relays and our A team pushed the very strong North Ayrshire team right to the finish line, where we took silver. The B team were only 4 secs behind the A team and just missed the bronze medal slot.

     pinFauldhouse Gala
Another excellent afternoon’s racing, resulting in three meet records (each paying £10 prize money) including the relay record (set by the excellent home team in 2003),
Raquel led the way with 3 golds, which were all PBs and two (fly + back) were meet records. Ciaran took 2 silvers as well as a gold in the relay (with Benjamin, Katie Feather and Raquel). Kathryn had a great day, taking a silver and two bronzes in a tough age group. Benjamin, Katie Feather and Rory G all took a bronze home with Rory G having the best swim of the day – almost 7 secs improvement in his 50m fly time.
The relay triumph was a great end to the day, though slightly spoilt by dubious decisions that disqualified two of our teams. Sometimes, that’s just swimming.

pinThe Peebles ASC Stars of the Future
A fabulous team performance saw every single swimmer coming home with a medal and we won both of the team trophies (Best Club and the Relay Trophy).
Both Ciaran and Raquel came home with 5 gold medals, Raquel swimming a huge PB in the breaststroke. In the individual events Rory G, Kathryn, Chris, JJ + Nieve all won a gold. Ellie, JJ, Kathryn, Chris + Rory G all won a silver with Fi wining two. And, Melissa and Euan won two bronzes each with Ciara and Ryan ensuring that their team won two bronzes in the relays.
In the relay competition, we won 5 out of 7 races and finished third in the other two. Congratulations to the whole team and thanks to the supporters who cheered loudly all afternoon

pinDavid Fergus strikes gold at Shanghai Special Olympics!
Porty swimmer David Fergus struck GOLD
at the Shanghai special OLYMPICS. In bringing his medal along to show to the other swimmers he received an ovation for his superb efforts.
David not only won Gold in the 100 free but was also part of the 4 x 50 freestyle relay team which won a 4th.  In his 50 breast he was 5th place winning a lovely sash in these last 2 events.  The experience for him and his family will last a lifetime and there are many exciting momentoes which David has to remind him of his experieince in China..not least the weighty GOLD medal.
Well Done David from ALL of us at Porty

Iain McFadyen gala - Prestonpans, Sat Sep 22 - Report

We have been attending this gala for several years and have won various medals in the past. This year we had a wonderful day, winning the team trophy for the first time (and by a huge margin). The list of medal winners is long and everyone swam PBs in some races.
Scott and JJ both did a 'Mark Spitz' (hands up who knows who he is) and won 7 golds each, Rory G won 5 golds with Douglas taking 3 golds and a silver. In fact, our boys won every single boys race. Sandy won 2 silvers and 2 bronzes and Robbie won a silver.
The girls also did extremely well, led by Amy with 2 golds, 3 silvers and 2 bronzes. Katie Ferg won 2 golds, a silver and a bronze, Carly won 2 golds and a silver, Lauren won a gold and 3 silvers with Nieve and Laura taking home 2 golds each.

pinMorpeth Annual Gala - Sun Sep 16 - Report

Fresh from success at Grangemouth, we made the long (but enjoyable) trip to Morpeth for our annual gala. The result was emphatic as we won by a very big margin this year. There were so many good swims + PBs, here are just a few of the best improvements;
Douglas (2.63 secs - back), Eileen (2.57 secs - back), Scott (2.50 secs - breaststroke), James (2.46 secs - IM) and Shaun (2.18 secs - breaststroke). Swim of the day goes to Raquel who unofficially broke the Scottish record for 100m IM.
That's two in a row, but after they won 6 in a row we need a few more victories to close the gap. Well done to everyone, swimmers, coaches and officials (esp Steven and Janette Bell).

pinGrangemouth Mags Meet - Sat Sep 15 - Report

Our first team visit to Grangemouth and what a day. Three of our swimmers won best boy or girl in their age (Raquel, Gavin and new boy Niall McLeod), our team won the relay event and we won the cup for best club.
Our individual medals were 6 golds (3 for Gavin, one each for Raquel, Niall and James), 4 silvers (2 for Raquel, one each for Niall and James) and 5 bronzes (two each for Niall and Rory W, one for Raquel). Robyn got 4th in the fly, Ciaran 5th in free and 6th in fly and Erin (McLeod) took 5th in the back.
Every single member of the team swam some PBs and we came home with a magnificent trophy.

pinRaquel's ripping records
Congratulations to Raquel for a fabulous achievement in June.
Not only did she break the EAST DISTRICT RECORD for 50m fly long course at the East District Open, she also broke the EAST DISTRICT RECORD for 50m fly short course the following week at the Musselburgh Open.
Now, we have heard that her swim in the Musselburgh Open also broke the SCOTTISH AGE GROUP RECORD.
That means that our swimmers have broken 2 Scottish records, 2 East District relay records, 2 East District short course records and 5 East District long course records - all in 2007 and all by 11yr olds.

Top Bananas

Congratulations
to Raquel Matos, Rory Mackay, Cameron MacPhail and Gavin Scoular for being selected for the 2007/08 East District Bronze squad training - Well done!

pin1Normal Training sessions resume!

When Porty High School returns we will be back to our normal full training schedule.

Just a reminder, particularly for Performance squad swimmers, that you will be expected at the sessions appropriate for your group - no slacking!
Those at Prestonpans on Fridays should be prepared for land training sessions that will include outside running (appropriate footwear required).

Cancelled Training session

The training session at RCP on Saturday 28 July has been cancelled due to another event taking place.

Loadsamoney!

PASC has raised £570 from the SASA Raffle tickets, which means that PASA gained 50% of this, which is £295. Thanks to all who returned their raffle tickets and helped raise much needed funds for the club.

The next fund raiser is the 'smartie tubes'! (thanks Janette!) Keep filling them with 20p pieces that parents love to give away, and return them to either Lorraine, Elaine, Susan, or any coach by the start of August.

Outstanding achievement!

Congratulations to the 4 11/12 boys who won a bronze medal for Portobello in their first ever Scottish National Age Group Championships being held at Tollcross on the Sunday 1st July 2007. The quartet of Cameron Macphail, Scott MacDougall, Lee Edwardson and Rory Watt were 3rd in the medley relay. Well done to them all. An outstanding swim by each of you.

Summer Training!
Okay - we all need holidays, but with the Club Champs at the end of August, you need to keep your fitness levels up!

For the month of July the following training schedule will be in place:-

Monday @ PSC 8-9:00 and @ RCP 8-9:30
Wednesday @ RCP 8-9:30
Friday @ PSC - 1 lane from 7-8 in the big pool & big pool only from 8-9, and @ Prestonpans 6:30 - 8:30 (no land training)
Saturday @ RCP 5-6 (3 lanes)
Sunday (only for those who normally attend on a Sunday) 5:00-6:00 remember to bring £1

A general rule of thumb - Prestonpans swimmers are best to go to RCP on Mondays & Wednesdays, while Porty High School swimmers go to PSC

If you're not sure where you should go on a certain day, ask a coach!

Overdue Updates!
Don't shoot the messenger - I can only publish what I receive!

East District Open - 2nd June

Only four swimmers competed at this long course championship, but they all did very well. Harvey swam a really good 50m fly and Gillian achieved long course PBs on both the 50m and 200m breaststroke. Raquel set a new EAST DISTRICT RECORD in the 50m fly, becoming the 4th Porty swimmer to break a district record this year.
Finally, Stewart won the bronze medal in the 50m breaststroke and then was crowned EAST DISTRICT CHAMPION in the 50m fly event.

Haddington Total Swimmer - 6th May

A big turnout from Porty for this excellent gala, we had 25 swimmers competing. That resulted in 7 finalists and produced two overall champions in Raquel and Cameron. Three swimmers finished in third place in their age group (Rory M, James and Rachel) with Clare PB and Jenny M also making their finals.
Several swimmers produced 5 star performances, with PBs in all 5 events - congratulations to Carly, Rachel, Douglas, Ciaran, James, Callum, Harvey and Daniel.

Hearts Novice - 29th April

20 of our less experienced swimmers attended this gala and had a great day.
Between them, Porty won 15 medals and lots of great swimming was seen. Top marks went to Katie F, who had a fab day winning 3 golds and a bronze. Chris M (a recent addition to PASC) also had a great day as he won 2 golds and a siver. Caitlin won two bronze medals and there was one each for Nieve, Euan, Eilidh, Robert, Laura and Sandy.
Well done to everyone, especially to those who had never swum in a gala before.

Lothian Leagues 2 - 21st April

Morning highlights - Both Amy (200m free) and Lee (50m breaststroke) were the fastest swimmers in their events.
There were lots of great swims, the most notable PBs were; Ciara (50m back), Melissa (50m free), Ryan (50m breaststroke), Kate (100m IM), Ciaran (50m fly), Raquel (50m back) and Clare PB (50m breaststroke)
The boys and girls 10/11 relay teams both won their event and the 8/9 girls were 2nd.

Afternoon highlights - overall event winners were Rory W (200m free), Rachel (100m back) and Harvey (100m fly).
Notable PBs were; Carly, Robyn and Will (200m free), Eileen (100m back) and Callum (100m fly). Fab swim of the afternoon was Gavin in the 200m IM - not only a huge PB but also a new 50m fly PB on the first split - awesome.

Scottish National Age Group Championships - 12-15 April - PASC entered a team in the 11- 14 age group.  We were 7th overall and the 3rd club team in the 4 x 100 free.  James Parr-Burman was 4th in East, 13th in Scotland in the 100 Free. Gavin Scoular was 1st in East and 11th in Scotland in the 800 Free. Very well done boys!

Message from afar! - Hey, Its Sarah Dodds! I moved to Canada about 3 years ago? Remember me? Well, I was looking at this website and i thought WOAH i should get in touch!! SO i did. So, how is everybody? Write back, Sarah*

p.s-CANADA'S AWESOME!

Dundee Minis Gala - Sunday March 18 - Another successful trip to Dundee, the highlight of which was Raquel winning the best girl trophy. As well as that trophy, Raquel also made all 4 finals and won a gold and a silver. Cammy made three finals, winning a gold and 2 silvers. Amy won a bronze in the backstroke final and both Clare PB and Rory M qualified for two finals each.

Clare PB alo managed to record a PB in every event, whilst Douglas and Lauren achieved 3 PBs (Lauren recording the biggest improvement of the day, a huge 7 secs off her fly time). Eilidh, Kathryn, Kate, Amy, Raquel and Cammy all achieved 2 PBs each. The journey home took slightly longer than expected when the exhaust fell off the minibus - a lesson learnt, as some people didn't have a jacket and it got rather cold sitting waiting for the breakdown truck. Thanks to all the parents for understanding that sometimes we don't get home when we expect to.

Warrender Gala - Sunday March 25 - More great swimming from our 11 yr olds in particular - Raquel won 2 golds and 2 silvers in this high quality gala, Cammy won 2 silvers and 2 bronzes whilst Lee won 2 silvers. We also had some great swimming from the 12 yr olds - both Sammy S and Rory W achieved 4 PBs each, with Rory's 200m free showing a big improvement. Lee also set 3 PBs and both Clare H and Cammy set two each.

Scottish Age Group Champs - Good luck to Gavin and James in the Scottish Nationals this weekend, and to the boys relay team who are competing on Thurs night.

East District Champs - Finals Weekend, Mar 3+4 - Fantastic Team Porty

What a weekend - Lee, Cammy and Raquel all made finals this weekend, with Lee winning silver in the 100m fly and Cammy taking the bronze in the same event. Raquel made the finals of the fly, back and breast which was a great achievement. James swam an excellent 100m free to achieve the qualifying time for the Scottish Champs, and Louise M took nearly 4 secs off her PB in
the 100m breastsroke.

However, the story of the weekend was the relay teams. On Sat, the 10/11 boys (Cammy, Lee, Rory M + Ciaran) took the silver medal in the medlay relay (losing to the exceptional Carnegie team, whose Mark Szaranek broke two Scottish records as well as some East District ones) and the girls team came a close 4th. In the afternoon freestyle relays, the girls (Raquel, Amy, Clare PB + Hannah) won the bronze medal and the boys again finished second only to be disqualified for a faulty changeover (which, it transpires, was perfectly OK).

Sunday brought more drama with the 12/13 girls finishing 6th in the medlay (out of 15 teams, and with 3 out of 4 team members only 12 yrs) and the boys 12/13 team taking the bronze medal. In the afternoon, the 12/13 girls were also disqualified for a faulty changeover which was also seen later on video to be legal. The third last event of the entire Championships (which have run over 4 weekends) was the boys 12/13 freestyle relay. James set off first, swimming under 29 secs for the first time in competition. Callum overtook the Fauldhouse swimmer to move us into 2nd place, and then Will swam a fantastic 28.9 to close the gap on Warrender to only 0.5 secs. Harvey brought it home with a stunning 27.4 to give us the GOLD medal.

Well done to everyone - you all did the Club proud and it was wonderful to receive so much praise from coaches and officials at other clubs who had seen how well Portobello had performed.

Edinburgh International - Feb 17/18 - A very busy programme at the RCP included several of our swimmers and some vey fine performances. Once again, we broke an EAST DISTRICT record. Clare Hyland did it again, this time breaking the record for 100m breaststroke. That's three certificates for Clare in three weeks - not bad going. And, a total of 8 records this year from our 11 year olds.

Cammy came close, missing the 100m back record by only a second and setting a further two PBs in his other swims. However, he (and the rest of the team, that's Rory M, Gav and Lee) had confirmation that the boys 4 x 50m medley relay record had been set by Porty at the Lothian Clubs Champs three weeks earlier.

That means, as we go into the East District Age Group Champs this weekend in Glenrothes, that Porty hold both the boys age 11 yrs relay records and the girls age 11 yrs medley relay record.
Good luck to everyone competing at Glenrothes, and lets see lots of Porty tracksuits on poolside.

East District Long Course Time Trials - Feb 10 - Several excellent swims at this event and another EAST DISTRICT RECORD. That's six (yes, 6) national and district records in 2007 so far - all from 11 yr olds. Once again it was super Gav who broke the record, this time in the 200m breaststroke. Well done Gavin, another really strong swim. Clare H almost did the same in the girls event - she was only 2 secs off the girls District record but still managed to record the fastest time in
Scotland for an 11 yr old girl in the past 12 months.

East District Distance Finals - Feb 3 - Only one Porty swimmer competed in this, but what a swimmer. Super Gav destroyed the 1500m freestyle EAST DISTRICT RECORD for 11 yr olds, reducing the previous record by over 43 secs. A wonderful swim from a young man who deserves all the praise he gets as he worked extremely hard to achieve that level of swimming.

Telfer Cup - Jan 28 - This is a small competition, run along side the Lothian Clubs event.
Although only 4 relay races are involved, it requires 2 swimmers of every age from 11 to over 16. Our younger swimmers took silver medals in both relays and the club finished 2 equal, ahead of several very good Lothian Clubs.

Lothian Clubs Championships - Jan 28 - A fantastic team performance, from one swimmer just past her 11th birthday right up to a past president approaching his 40th one. We won the 3rd
division trophy and would have finished as the second top club overall if the all the teams were in one league. Furthermore, we were by far the strongest club in the 11 + under age group recording the fastest time in 8 out of the 10 events.

Top performance of the day went to the 11 + under girls medlay relay team - Amy Blackley, Clare Hyland, Raquel Matos and Clare Parr-Burman. The girls destroyed the EAST DISTRICT RECORD, knocking nearly 8 secs off the previous record. The 11 + under boys also swam a fabulous time, though they didn't quite beat the existing (questionable) record. There were PBs all over the place, and special mention goes to Jenny M who reluctantly agreed to compete in the 100m fly and then swam a 9 sec PB. Well done to all involved, and Robyn was able to finish the day by pushing our president into the pool (still fully dressed in his judge's kit). Maybe he'll learn not to make rash promises to encourage faster swims from our competitiors.

Scottish Schools Champs - Jan 27 - A great day at Tollcross for our swimmers who qualified for the finals. The highlight of the day was the girls under 12 yrs 50m breaststroke event, which Clare H won in a fantastic time of 39.99 secs. She not only won the race and the gold medal but she destroyed the East District record, beating it by a huge 3.69 secs. Lee and Cammy took silver and bronze in the 50m fly, with Lee beating his own Scottish record time. However, Mark Szaranek swam the fastest time in the UK for an 11 yr old to beat our two boys. Gavin swam a PB to take 5th in the boys 50m breaststroke and Raquel finished 8th overall in the 50m fly and equalled the East District record for 11 yr olds (only 3 weeks after her birthday).

Stirling Open - 20/21 Jan - This was an extremely high calibre gala, with most of the best swimmers in Scotland under the age of 15 participating. We had 8 finalists during the weekend and both Gavin and Clare H won bronze medals. We produced an excellent 49 PBs from 62 swims, with virtually everyone setting new personal records; Raquel 6, Gavin 5, Cammy 5, Daniel 3, Harvey 3, Clare H 3, Fraser 2, Sam 2, Rory W 2, Amy 2, Robyn 2 and Bruce, Lee and Rory M all set one each. Lee and James made the biggest improvements (in their 100m fly), closely followed by Harvey and Raquel (100m fly too). Finally, John MacDougall lost a bet with Robyn about her fly time - more about this to follow soon.

Livingston Development Gala - Sat Jan 20 - Some of our least experienced swimmers took part in this gala at Whitburn. Everyone did really well, swimming faster than expected. Ryan was very unlucky, missing a bronze medal by only 0.02 secs in the breaststroke. Euan also finished 4th in his breaststroke race, as did Ciara and Douglas in the backstroke. Nieve, Eilidh and Ellie finished 5th, 7th + 8th in the backstroke. Michaela, Laura, Robbie and Sandy all swam in the afternoon session and the relay team finished in 4th place in the last race of the day.

HOT NEWS - On Sunday 21st Januray at the RCP, Lee Edwardson broke both the East District and SCOTTISH NATIONAL age group records for the 50m fly. Both records are still to be confirmed as official, but he definately swan faster than the current records. Please congratulate him when you see him as this is a fantastic achievement - just think, no 11 year old Scottish boy has ever swum a competitive 50m fly in a long course pool faster than Lee swam tonight. The previous record was set in 2000 so it was one of the longest standing records for 11 year olds.

The Competitions Calendar for January to June 2007 is now in the Competitions Page.

Scottish Schools Finals - A fabulous start to the new year - we have a dozen swimmers who have qualified for the finals of the Scottish Schools Championships. So, well done to; Rory M (50m back), Gavin + Clare H (50m breaststroke), Raquel, Lee and Cammy (50m fly), Rachel + Alison (100m breaststroke), Harvey + Stewart (100m fly), Louise F (100m + 200m back), James (100m free), Rachel + Harvey (200m breaststroke) and Stewart (200m IM).

Well done also to Kate J, Louise M, Hannah and Clare PB who all swam faster than some who reached the finals but didn't finish in the top three in Edin so weren't entered for the Scottish finals.
Good luck to all of you - keep training hard.

Webmaster's note - this is a fantastic achievement , congratulations to all the swimmers and coaches at Portobello ASC who have put in hours of hard work to make this possible.

Edinburgh Schools Finals - A fabulous night at the RCP saw 22 Porty swimmers competing in finals, producing 10 medals to add the 5 we had already won at the longer distance events. Well done to everyone who competed (and those who couldn't, including Raquel who was stopped by a poor rule) - you all did the club proud. The gold medalists were Gavin, Cameron, Rory M and Harvey, Rachel won a silver and bronzes were collected by Claire H, Rory G, James, Jenny M and Alison. We now have to wait to see who will qualify for the Scottish Schools Champs in Jan.

Peebles Results - Finally, the full results from Peebles have arrived. So, in addition to
winning both trophies we also won the following;
3 Meet records (2 for Raquel, 1 for Gavin)
8 Gold medals (2 for Raquel and Rory G, one each for Douglas, Gavin, Kathryn
and Lee
)
5 Silver medals (2 for Cammy, one each for JJ, Ciaren and Kathryn)
4 Bronze medals (one each for Louise, Amy, Clare PB and JJ)

Well done again - all that training is certainly paying dividends.

Carnegie Minis - A very competitive gala with some excellent swimmers from North Ayrshire as well as top quality East District swimmers. We had 9 swimmers competing and 6 of them managed to qualify for finals (Raquel for all 4). Raquel won a silver for fly with yet another PB (once again breaking a meet record but not winning the race) and Gavin took the bronze in breatstroke (qualifying in a great PB). Amy had a huge PB in her breaststoke and Ashlie took nearly a sec off hers. Lauren made two PBs from two swims and Louise just missd a breastroke PB by 0.17 secs. Rory M took another 0.5 sec off his fly time in the final whilst Douglas knocked a full 3 secs off his free time and made the breaststroke final. Top marks go to Euan who not only swam in all four strokes (getting 2 PBs) but stepped up to join the boys 10/11 relay team for the last event - not bad for an 8 yr old.

Wonderful Weekend (11/12 November)

Probably the best weekend for Porty in many years saw us competing at three galas, as well as getting confirmation of the East District record. The weekend started with the Peebles Stars of the Future event - we don't have the full results yet, but the headlines make great reading. We won both the Relay cup (again) as well as the overall team trophy, which is the first time we've ever won this team competition. Furthermore, 19 out of our 24 swims per PBs. More details when we get them.

Also on Sat, some of our older swimmers were competing at the Lothian Region graded meet. Harvey won a gold and a silver but was 0.26 sec too quick in the free so got a speeding ticket. Shaun also won a couple of medals (Silver and Bronze) and several excellent PBs were recorded, including Shaun and Daniel knocking 5 secs off their 100m back time and Joanna reducing her 100 breaststroke and 100IM times by 3.5 secs.

The weekend ended on a real high, with a team of 10 and 11 yrs competing at Fauldhouse. Raquel upset the Fauldhouse treasurer by breaking 3 meet records (10 pounds per record broken) and our relay team came close (that would have cost him 40 quid). In total, we won 4 golds, 5 silvers and 4 bronze medals in the individual events as well as taking gold and bronze in the relays - our 'B' team was only 2 secs behind Warrender 'A'.

So many great swims (22 PBs), some of the highlights were; Hannah and Rory M breaking the 40 sec barrier in 50m fly, Gavin and Lee doing the same in 50m Back, Amy taking almost 2 secs off her Back time, Clare H taking a full 2 secs off her breaststoke time (and winning the gold), Clare PB taking 2.5 secs off her breaststroke best, Gavin taking 3 secs off his 50m free (and winning a silver in the 200m free despite stopping after 6 lengths) and Louise taking another sec off her 50m fly.

A wonderful weekend and all of our swimmers should be proud of themselves - they performed fantastically well and everyone should be up for the Edin Schools finals next week.

EAST DISTRICT RECORD - We have just had confirmation that earlier this year our boys 10/11 age relay team broke the East District record for the 4 x 50m freestyle relay. This is a fantastic achievement and puts our name in the record books for the first time in several years. Congratulations to Rory Mackay, Gavin Scoular, Lee Edwardson and Cameron Macphail on a marvelous achievement, swimming 2:15.69 to break the previous record.

East District Champs - 4/5thNov - A fantastic start to this year's competition, as Lee won a bronze medal in the 200IM. This is the first individual medal we have won for 4 years and follows the bronze medals the 10/11 yrs boys won in the relays in March. In addition, Lee also finished 6th in the 200 free so he has scored points in two events already. Furthermore, Harvey has qualified for the 100 free and 100 breaststroke finals in March and Amy has also qualified for the 100m breaststroke finals. In total we recorded 21 PBs from 28 swims so well done to everyone who was competing. The full set of results can be found in the Competitions Page.

Iain Mcfadyen Memorial Gala, 7th September. Meet report () and the full set of results can be found in the Competitions Page.

Santa is coming early to Portobello ASC !! - The Club, 23 swimmers and 4 coaches are going to Club la Santa, Lanzarote from the 12 - 19th October for a training camp.

Edinburgh Schools - A very busy night at Ainslie Park included all of the 50m and 100m for the primary and secondary schools. A fantastic total of 20 Porty swimmers (at least, we might end up with more than that) have qualified for the finals night in November. Half of them qualified in the top three places so hopefully there'll be a few medals to celebrate. It would be great to have lots of supporters there and wherever possible can our swimmers wear Porty caps please.
Too many great performances to list them all, but the big PBs were; Kathryn and Rory G - around 4 secs off their 50 free, Kate J and Andrew S - 4 secs off their 50m breaststroke, Carly - nearly 10 secs off her 100m free, Sam - 7 secs off his 100m breaststroke, Bruce - over 4 secs off his 100m free and Harvey with over 4 secs off his 100m fly.

Scottish Aquathlon Finals - Numerous Porty swimmers competed recently in the finals of the Scottish Aquathlon Series. In the race, we won 5 medals - Gold for Fiona Corbett and Stewart MacPhail, Silver for Ellen Morton and bronze for Kate Johnston and Scott MacDougall. In the overall 2006 championship, we had two Scottish Champions (Fiona and Stewart) and three runners-up - Ellen, Cameron MacPhail and Jenny MacDougall.

Well done to all our swimmers, who have all done really well this year. Its worth noting that if Portobello ASC was affiliated to Triathlon Scotland then we would have won the team event too.

FINS Aug 19/20 - Not such a big turn out this year from Porty but quite a few medals all the same. Isla led the way with a gold and 2 silvers (one of which missed gold by 3/100ths of a sec). Rachel also won a gold, Scott a silver and Rory W won 2 bronzes. In total we had 15 swims in finals (Rory W in 4, Scott and Isla in 3 each and Rachel, Jenny T, Louise M, Clare H and Callum all in 1 each) so the majority of our swimmers made a final.

We also had 14 PBs during the weekend, the biggest improvements being 5.5 secs for John M in the 100 free and 5.5 secs for Isla in the 100 fly. Best 50m improvement went to Jenny T in the back where she knocked 3.2 secs off her previous best.

Congratulations to David Fergus who has been selected to represent Great Britain Special Olympics in Shanghai, China in 2007. There is much fund raising to be done so anybody who would like to support David, please speak to Cath or one of the coaches. The first thing planned is a sponsored swim in October. David also swam in the recent Special gala at Ponds Forge and won a gold in the 100 free, a silver in the 50 breast stroke and bronze in the 50 back. Well done David from all of us.

Wedding congratulations to Giles Gilhooly and Barbara who tied the knot at Gleneagles Hotel on the 12th August. It was a grand event with young Rory Gallacher (10 years old member of the club and at the wedding), as well as others, saying that Andrew Gilhooly's speech was fantastic. It was undoubtedly a great evening. All the Best for your Future Giles and Barbara form all at PASC.

Swimmer of the Month is being resurrected with Jenny Taylor winning the "new" quaich for the month of July. This is for great improvement in technique and therefore her times in both back and butterfly.

Musselburgh Open - Another huge turnout from Porty saw us winning loads of medals (43, including 6 relays) and recording 64 PBs. In the morning session Cammy won 5 golds, Rory G 2 golds + 1 silver, Ashlie 1 gold + 1 bronze, Rory M 1 silver + 3 bronze, Raquel 1 silver + 1 bronze, Amy B took a silver and both Fiona C and Douglas won a bronze.

The afternoon saw another 5 Macphail golds (Stewart this time), Rachel won an excellent 3 golds + 2 silvers, Clare H got 2 silvers, Carly and Jenny M got 1 silver each, Fiona W got 2 bronzes and Gavin and Louise one bronze each (and Louise only turned 11 the day before the gala).

PBs in the morning went to; Amy(4), Ashlie(3), Rory G, Rory M, Lauren, Euan and Fiona C (all 2 each) and one each to Raquel and Douglas. The afternoon produced even more PBs; Rachel (all 5), Jenny T, Carly, Clare H and Harvey (4 each), Louise M and Jenny M (3 each), Joanna, Isla, Fiona W, Samantha, Callum, Sam, Shaun and Daniel (all with 2) and Rory W and Bruce got one each. Finally, relay teams in all but one age group won us 3 golds and three bronzes. Well done to every one of you, and thanks to the mums and dads who helped with team management.

Stirling Triathlon - Only 5 Porty members in this one, out of over 80 competitors. However, all 5 finished in the top 3 for their age group with our one win going to Jenny MacDougall. After a thrilling race, Jenny finished only 2 secs ahead in a race which lasted nearly 18 mins. Scott MacDougall, Will Johnston and Kate Johnston all took second places and Cameron Macphail finished third. Great performances from them all and hopefully they'll all get invitations to the Scottish team trials to pick the teams for the GB inter-regional Championships in September.

Brilliant swims from new swimmer Scott Gray earned him a clean sweep of medals at the Hearts Novice Gala at Leith Academy on 27th May. He won gold in his freestyle, silver in back and bronze in bfly. Dean Gribble won the 50 breaststroke and was 2nd to Scott in the freestyle. Ciaran McGeever in his first competition for the Club won a silver in his free and 2 bronzes in Bfly and Back. Other individual medallists were Greg Wilson, silver in the 50 back: Douglas Leslie won a bronze in the breast and Andrew Swinney a bronze in the freestyle. The canon relay team came in 3rd and all won a bronze medal. For some of the swimmers this was their very first gala. You all swam brilliantly. The full set of results can be found in the Competitions Page.

Morpeth Gala A great team performance meant that we won the Cup for the first time since 2000. Excellent swims in all strokes and across all ages resulted in us wining all but three races. The winning margin was over 100 points (after us losing by 2 points last year) and congratulations go to every member of the team.

Since Morpeth won the last 5 years, and are still ahead overall (this competition started in 1971), we need to keep raising our game to ensure we win again next year. Thanks to all the mums (and dads) who provided a wonderful meal for all the swimmers and supporters.

Haddington Total Swimmer

28 swimmers from Porty, making us the biggest team there. What a great day, with many exceptional swims and PBs. Congrats to the MacPhail boys, as both Stewart and Cameron won their age groups. Well done too to Gavin, collecting the silver in the 10/11 final (after getting DQd in the free and giving his mum a nightmare wait on the finalists being announced).

Raquel swam 4 PBs, including a fabulous 100IM. Louise and Lauren both swam 3 PBs, with Louise's fly being particularly good. Gavin had 4 PBs and one DQ with both his 100IM and 200IM looking great. Rory Watt and John McD both managed 3 PBs and both had great fly swims. Isla achieved a magnificent 5 out of 5 PBs, including an excellent 100IM. Robyn too had a great 100IM and Jenny M almost broke the 40 sec mark in her breaststroke.

James and Daniel both achieved 5 out of 5 PBs, almost matched by Sam who had 4 PBs and a DQ. Not to be outdone, Fiona W also managed 4 PBs including a great fly. Finally, Stewart had several excellent swims and won the oldest age group by a big margin.

Thanks to John, John and May for helping organise such a big team.

Scottish Youth Triathlon Championships

Another excellent day for Porty swimmers, taking 5 medals at the national champs. Ellen Morton took top honours, winning gold in the 9/10 age group. Cameron won silver in the 11/12 boys and Jenny M won silver in the 13/14 girls. Kate J and Scott M both won a bronze medal in the 11/12 age groups.

Edinburgh International Meet, RCP 29th/30th April 2006. Congratulations to the swimmers from Portobello who competed in this meet along with some of the swimmers who were in the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne earlier in the year. It was a great competition and money being made by those lucky enough to be 1st, 2nd or 3rd in their age groups. Outstanding swimmer from Portobello has to go to James Parr-Burman who took 3 secs off his 100 free entry time to swim a 1.08 and he then bettered it in a real gutsy final to swim a 1.07. On the Sunday he improved his 100 Bfly by 7 seconds to finish 12th in a time of 1.22.63.

Other swimmers were Shaun MacLeod, Will Johnston who swam well in both his breaststroke and free, Louise Fleming who swam the 2 back events, Robyn Gallacher and Carly Mills both swimming free and well done to Joanna Reed who looked as if she was in control of her race from the start and swam a Long Course PB. Roll on next year when we have a bigger number of entries!!

Thanks also to the "runners" who helped with the baskets and had an opportunity to see the top swimmers in the country.

The full set of results can be found in the Competitions Page.

Congratulations to Lex White and Ian Brown who were married on Saturday the 22nd April at St Margaret's Chapel in the Castle, with the reception at the George Hotel. A great day was had by all. Lex looked stunning and they will both be sadly missed as they move away to Ireland for their married life.

Portobello Aquathlon - We had 10 Porty swimmers in this event, held at the Pool and on the Prom on the first Sun in Apr. Jenny M won the girls 13/14 event and Ellen Morton took 3rd in the 9/10 age group. In the boys 11/12 event we had 7 Porty swimmers with Cameron missing the gold by one second and Lee taking the bronze. Thanks to the parents who helped with Marshalling, especially Carol McDonald and May MacDougall who spent and hour and a half at the far end of the prom ensuring that the runners turned at the correct point.

Stirling Aquathlon - The first Aquathlon of the season, and 10 Porty swimmers were competing. We did very well across the various ages, with Fiona Corbett and Stewart MacPhail winning in the youngest and oldest age groups. Jenny M came second in the 13/14 girls and Ellen Morton, Cameron MacPhail and Will Johnston all finished third in their age groups. For those interested, the Scottish Youth Triathlon Championships will be held at the RCP next month for those up to 14yrs old.

Warrender Gala - A top quality event, with only a half dozen Porty swimmers. Cameron did extremely well, winning one gold and three silvers and setting a new meet record for the 200 free. Rory M set a PB for the 200 free, JJ did one in his 100IM, Lauren did one in the 50 breaststroke and Louise set one in the 50 fly. Gavin was our sole representative on the Sunday and set PBs in the 100IM, 200 free and 50 fly.

Dundee Mini Gala - We had a great day in Dundee, with 14 swimmers from Porty taking part. Most people did all 4 strokes, and in total we recorded a fabulous 41 PBs.We had fifteen finalists, with Cameron winning a gold , silver and bronze, Robyn and Raquel winning a silver (both for fly) and Lee winning a bronze (also for fly). In fact, in the 10yrs age we had 3 out of 6 finalists for both boys and girls in fly. The relay teams also did vey well, with the boys finishing second (but no medals!!). Thanks to the parents who assisted with transport - hopefully we can do it again next year. The full set of results can be found in the Competitions Page.

The second day of the East District Age Group finals didn't include any Portobello relay teams, but it did include Bruce Mouat and Robyn Gallacher in the 50 fly. Bruce didn't quite match his excellent time from the qualifying day final, but he put in another fine performance. Robyn set another PB in the heats (with the fastest 50 fly time from any girl in our club) to become the first Portobello swimmer in several years to make an East District final. She swam an even better time in the final, and deserves congratulations from everyone.

East District finals, Glenrothes, 4th March. Brilliant swims from Cameron Macphail, Lee Edwardson, Rory MacKay and Gavin Scoular led them to win an East District Bronze medal in both the medlay relay and the freestyle relay. The full set of results can be found in the Competitions Page.

Saturday 18th February 06
This was a very busy weekend for Portobello with a team entered in the Duns Countryside Challenge Cup and the Lothian Region Intermediate Leagues held at Musselburgh. Both teams swam superbly.

Our younger swimmers at Duns were 2nd overall winning 7 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze medals.
~Gold for Gavin Scoular in the 50 breaststroke, and 100 Free in a closely fought swim: Cameron Macphail in the 50 butterfly, 50 back and 100 IM: Rory Gallacher 25 back in a margin of 2.5 secs: and the joint 11&U team also received Gold medals in the 8 x 25 free relay.
~Silver medals to the following swimmers Rory Gallacher, 25 breaststroke: Jenny Taylor, 50 breaststroke: Rory Watt, 50 breast: JJ Gibson Eaglesham, 25 free and 25 Bfly, and the 10/11 team of 2 boys and 2 girls won silver medals in the 4 x 25 Medlay relay.
~Bronze for Robyn Gallacher, 50 free and 50 back: Bruce Mouat, 50 back and 100 free.
This is an excellent result from our younger swimmers and all the swimmers who performed swam brilliantly. Great work.

Not to be outdone, even though it was a holiday week and some of our swimmers were unavailable as they were in other countries, and many were at Duns, our League swimmers did us proud. Our younger swimmers 8/9 and 10/11 years swam in the morning.
Fiona Corbett was the first 10 year in the 200 Free, Claire Parr Burman was 2nd in the 100 IM and the 50 Bfly, Amy Blackley was 4th in the 50 Breaststroke. Our 10/11 girls were 4th overall.
There were many other good swims, some swimming for the first time (Erin Hardy and Euan McIvor) and performing very well.

The afternoon was for those swimmers 12/13 and 14+. James Parr Burman, not to be beaten by his sister was 1st in the 200 IM and also 1st in the 200 free in an excellent time of 2.35.21, over the same distance Jennifer Souter swam very well to come in 5th. Isla Roden was 3rd in the 200 IM and 1st in the 100 Bfly and Ben Stobbart was 1st in the 100 breaststroke. The 12/13 boys (James PB, Harvey Ferguson Ben Stobbart and Sean Kneeshaw ) came in 3rd in the relay. Well done to all other swimmers who helped Portobello gain points.

East District Age Groups - Feb 4/5

The final weekend of qualifying saw 7 Portobello swimmers competing, and produced some excellent swims. On the Sat, both John McDonald and Bruce beat their 50 back PBs by over 1.5 secs and Bruce then qualified for finals weekend. Robyn and Jenny T both reduced their 100m free PBs by around a sec though Fiona W DQ'd in her 100 back.

On Sun, Robyn shaved a little off her 100 back time but the 50 fly was the main event. In the heats, Carly and Bruce both took nearly 3 secs off their PB (with Carly's time being 0.77 secs quicker than Bruce). However, Bruce's time was good enough to reach the qualifying final where he knocked a further 2 secs off his PB to finish 3rd and qualify for Finals weekend.

We now have 5 swimmers in individual events on finals weekend, as well as 6 relay teams competing. Lets make a real noise and make sure everyone know that Portobello are there in numbers.

Triathlon/ Aquathlon/ Duathlon - The new 2006 race calender is available here with details of most of the Aquathlons and the couple of Triathlons available to kids. The 2nd race is at Portobello Pool, and a big entry by our swimmers would be great.

Porty swimmers started 2006 with a bang, at the New Year's Day Duathlon (it was run - bike - run) at the Commonwealth Pool. Scott MacDougall and Cameron MacPhail came 1st and 2nd in the boys under 12s and Kate Johnston was 2nd in the girls under 12s. In the over 12s, Jenny MacDougall won the girls event and Will Johnston was 5th in the boys.

Following some excellent swims from Portobello swimmers in the Lothian Region Club Championships at Kirkcaldy on the Sunday 29th January we finished 2nd in Division 3. This was a great result as we have not entered this competition for many years, and, we only entered half of the full complement of swimmers. What makes it even more remarkable is that many of our swimmers were ill on the day and unable to attend. Real effort made by some swimmers to help us out on the day. Particular thanks and committment shown by Gavin Scoular and Joanne Reid who both demonstrated a great fighting attitude. Well done to all Portobello swimmers.

The Scottish Schools Swimming Chamionships were held at Tollcross Pool on the 28th January. Stewart Macphail won silver in the boys 15/16 100 Backstroke in an excellent time of 1.04.34. Vivienne and Alison Fleming were both in the girls 17/19 years 100 Breaststroke and came in 3rd and 5th respectively. Louise Fleming competed in the finals of the 17/19yrs 100 mtrs Back and was 9th. Lee Edwardson and Cameron Macphail were both in the boys 12 and under 50 Butterfly and came in 6th and 7th respectively in the final. Well done to all finalists as I know some of you were not feeling 100% well.

1930 and Portobello held a very tightly contested gala on Friday the 27th jan at Leith Academy. After the Butterfly events we were 7 points ahead. Following the Freestyle events there was only 1 point in the competition with only the relays to swim for. Portobello did well and we won by 11points: 129 to 140. Thanks to all the parents and swimmers who turned up. Thanks to all those who helped make the Gala run smoothly. We couldn't do it without your support. I am sure there are some swimmers who have totally lost their voices!!!

Lex White swam in the SASA National Short Course Championships, Tollcross Pool, Glasgow from the 13 -15th January. She just missed out on a medal finish and was placed 4th in the final of the 50 Butterfly in a time of 29.00 secs. She was seeded 5th in both the 100 Bfly and the 50 Free but had to pull out due to illness. Well done Lex.

The new squads and Training times for 2006 are in the Groups Page.

The Programme of Events for January to June 2006 is in the Competitions Page.

Triathlon News

Jenny MacDougall and Stewart MacPhail have both been selected for the Scottish Triathlon Squads. Jenny will join the Youth squad (for those aged 14 - 16 by end of next year) and Stewart has made the Development squad, which is a step above the Youth squad. Congratulations to both of them, its a fantastic achievement

Considering the talent that we have at Porty in the under 14s, we should have great representation in Aquathlons and Triathlons next year. If anyone would like more info, please speak to John MacPhail or John MacDougall.

Haddington Time Band - 25 Nov

This is a difficult gala (not liked by all the coaches) as the kids are put into time bands with the usual aim of winning their race. However, to ensure that the appropriate kids are entered, those who beat the fastest time in the band are penalised. So, when you hear that we had 21 PBs from 40 swims you'll understand why we didn't retain the trophy.

All the girls had PBs in the fly, including Jenny T with over 5.5 secs improvement and Jenny M with nearly 5 secs off her PB. That swim was the fastest 50 fly by a girl in our club this year, although Isla was only 0.16 behind her on the night. Lauren N improved her free by over 4 secs and her back by nearly 4 secs. Dean had a 6 sec PB in the back and James knocked over 3 secs off his fly record.

In the 100 IM Carly, John M and Jenny M all beat their PB by around 5 secs and Clare knocked a fantastic 7 secs off her best time. We finished the night in second place, which was very impressive after all the penalty points we accrued.

Carnegie Minis - 20th Nov

This was a tough gala, with good entries from the West coast in addition to the usual quality from East Scotland. Cammy made all 4 finals, picking up a silver and a bronze. Kathryn had a fantastic day, making three finals in her first full gala. Fiona C, JJ and Louise M all made one final each.

Jenny T had a 2 sec PB on her free and JJ took almost 2 secs off his fly PB. Cammy had a great backstroke event, and took 1.5 secs off his (already impressive) PB. Both Carly and Fiona broke under the 40 sec barrier for freestyle, but swim of the day has to go to Louise. She knocked over 4 secs off her breaststroke PB and recorded the fastest 50 breastroke by an under 12 girl in our club this year. Furthermore, she was only half a sec behind Scott and 2 secs behind Cammy - the boys had better look out.

Edin Schools Finals - Thurs Nov 17

A great night at the RCP, with 10 Porty swimmers in individual finals and several more competing in relays. Cameron won gold in the 50 fly, setting a new PB along the way. Considering that this was long course, it was a fantastic swim. Older brother Stewart took a silver and a bronze, Louise F won a silver and Robyn, James and Scott each won a bronze. The relays brought more medals, on a big night for our young swimmers (many of who had never raced long course or swum in front of a crowd this big). Jenny M, Scott and Bruce all won silvers in the relays and bronze medals were collected by John McD, Rory M, Rory W, Helen and the Fleming sisters. Finally, Will Johnston (our newest recruit) won a gold with his school relay team.

Peebles Stars of the Future - Sat Nov 12

What a day - 14 swimmers, 14 stars. We won 12 individual medals and 6 relay teams won medals (out of 7 events). It was the youngest ones who led the way - 2 golds each for Rory G and Raquel and a gold and a silver for JJ. Cammy also won a gold and a silver, Rory M won 2 silvers, Robyn got one silver and Clare won a bronze. We came second overall, only 4 points behind Musselburgh and beating Midlothian, Haddington and Aquanauts in the process. But the best was kept 'til last. Having won 3 relays (including the canon relay, with 6 swimmers from each team) we won the Relay trophy which we keep for a year. Thanks to everyone, especially Cath, John M and Paula who kept the swimmers motivated.

Lothian Graded Meet - Sat Nov 12

Not to be outdone by their younger team-mates, the over 11s were recording some great times at Kirkcaldy. Fiona and James both won gold, Rachel got a silver and a bronze and Shaun won a silver. Some of the times were astounding - Shaun took nearly 12 secs off his 100 back time, Daniel sliced over 8 secs from his breaststroke PB and nearly 8 secs from his 100 free. Isla was on fire too, taking nearly 5 secs from her 100 back time and Ben S took over 4 secs from his 100 breaststroke. Rachel (in her first gala for the club) put in a fantastic 100 free, Fiona recorded a superb 100 breaststroke, Jade set a new PB in her 100 back and James made another improvement in his 100 free. Thanks to John R and Angela Wright for managing the team on the day.

More news (on weekends 3 & 4) from the Water Polo section is in the Water Polo Page.

Hearts Premier Gala (Oct 8). Fantastic swims from Cameron produced 4 golds, 3 PBs and the trophy for best boy in his age-group. Scott also won a medal, getting the bronze in the 100 breaststroke. Considering the high calibre of this gala, it was a bit mean not to have 4th, 5th and 6th awards. Especially as JJ had a 4th and a 6th, and both James P-B and Scott were 6th in the 100 free.

Both Fiona W and Jenny Mac improved their 100 breaststroke PBs, as did JJ in the 50 breaststroke. James and Scott had great improvements in their 100 free times (8 secs for James and 7secs for Scott) but they were eclipsed by Jenny Taylor with a fab 13 sec improvement in her 100 free and an equally big improvement from Bruce in the 100 fly.

Edin Schools Heats (Primary swimmers). We had 12 swimmers in these heats, and ten of them produced PBs. Robyn and Rory W both took 3 secs off their PBs (50 back and breaststroke respectively). Top performance goes to Rory MacKay, who swam a brilliant 50 back.

6 swimmers have qualified for the finals, with Cameron and Robyn qualifying as the fastest swimmer in their events and Scott as second fastest in his. Fingers crossed for some medals, and they are joined in the finals (Nov 17 at Commonwealth Pool, come along to support your team-mates) by Rory W, Rory M and Bruce. Also, Parsons Green (girls) and Duddingston (boys) have made the relay finals - each with 3 Porty swimmers in their team.

East District Time Trials (Oct 1). Only 5 swimmers this time in an event open to 11 and over who need entry times for the East District Champs. Scott shaved a little off his 100 breaststroke PB and Bruce made a good improvement in his 100 free. However, it was the girls who shone with Jenny Souter improving on her entry time for the 400m free by over 10 secs. Top prize to Robyn this time, as she set an excellent time in the 100 back and then demolished her 100 free time by 14 secs.

Mile swim (Sep 23). This year's competition had 50 swimmers, with another 6 young ones completing an 800m swim. There were many excellent swims but there can only be one winner and this year its Clare Parr-Burman who beat the handicapper's time by over 10 mins. Clare has been training hard all year, and has also been competing in aquathlons as well as swimmings galas so well done to her for a fabulous effort. The full results are in the Competitions Page.

Iain McFadyen Memorial (Sep 17). The best gala in ages for team spirit. We had 16 swimmers there (some teams had 25 or more), completing 50 swims of which 38 were PBs. We won 5 individual golds (2 each for James P-B + Isla and one for Scott), 2 silvers (Carly + Rory Watt) and two bronzes (Isla + Rory W). In addition, we won 9 flashes for results in 4th, 5th or 6th. We also won three golds and a silver from the 4 relays events and with a bigger team we could have won the overall trophy.

Some excellent PBs were achieved, especially by Dean Gribble, Lauren Ness, Carly, James P-B and top prize to John McDonald for taking 6 secs of his 50m breaststroke record.

Fins gala (Aug 20/21). A good opportunity to get 100m times, this was a good gala for some of the older swimmers. Fiona Wright and Jenny MacD both won bronze medals and Shaun MacLeod cut 5.5 secs from his 100 breaststroke PB. Fiona also cut 4 secs from both her 100 breaststroke and 100 back. Biggest improvement went to Scott, who sliced over 8 secs from his 100 free.

The August - December events and competition list is now in the Competitions Page.

The new Training Groups from 19th August are in the Groups Page.

Congratulations to David Fergus, who at the recent Special Olympics in Glasgow from 1st - 9th July, won the GOLD medal (see below) in the top division in the 50 m Front crawl with a 2 second PB. Brilliant swimming David. Not content with that he also won the SILVER, again in the top division, in his favourite stroke, the 50 m Breaststroke. That makes him fastest in front crawl and 2nd fastest in Breaststroke in UK over these distances, at that time. He was 8th in the 100 breaststroke, top division and with the support of 3 other boys came in 5th in the Medley relay. Keep up the good work! David receiving his medal
